E-commerce giant eBay is currently looking for ways to get non-fungible tokens (NFTs) onto its platform, the company said on Monday. The company also said that it is open to accepting cryptocurrency as a payment medium in the future.
A growing number of companies have begun accepting virtual currencies as a form of payment. From buying a Tesla using Bitcoin to buying basketball tickets using Dogecoin, this asset class is stepping closer to mainstream adoption.
PayPal also jumped on the bandwagon, allowing users to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrencies through online wallets.
In a statement with Reuters, eBay said, “We are always looking at the most relevant forms of payment and will continue to assess that going forward. We have no immediate plans, but it (cryptocurrency) is something we are keeping an eye on.”
In an interview with CNBC, eBay’s CEO Jamie Lannone asserted that the company is looking at the option of accepting the virtual currency as a payment medium.
He also added,
“We’re exploring opportunities on how we can enable it (NFTs) on eBay in an easy way, Everything that’s collectible has been on eBay for decades and will continue to be for the next few decades.”
