Microsoft enters the hugely popular Metaverse

The concept of “Metaverse” has remained in the industry for quite some time now. However, it has started to gain traction thanks to major companies outlining their plans about it. Recently, computer software giant Microsoft is taking a plunge into the metaverse through updates to two of its popular services.

Microsoft has updated its Teams and Xbox services, along with a new addition called “Dynamics 365 Connected Spaces”.

CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella announced the company’s new direction towards metaverse during the Microsoft Ignite conference.

Talking about the metaverse, he said:

“The Metaverse enables us to embed computing into the real world and to embed the real world into computing. Bringing real presence to any digital space. What’s most important is that we are able to bring our humanity with us, and choose how we want to experience this world.”

The update for Microsoft Teams is called “Mesh”. Moreover, its initial rollout is in 2022 and it will provide users with personalized digital avatars and immersive spaces to meet in the metaverse. Also, there’s no specific requirement for any device.

In the near future, Mesh will allow organizations to build custom spaces to support contexts such as meetings or “social mixers”.

Microsoft plans to debut the first preview for its Dynamics 365 Connected Spaces product in December 2021. Moreover, Its objective with the product is to enable organizations to combine metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI) with their businesses.

Also, the firm added that it is pushing towards a “hybrid work environment” where Spaces are used for harnessing observational data from the cameras.
