Recently, the government of Russia has legalized the use of crypto in the country. However, they’ve warned the students regarding the use of crypto in the country. According to their recent law, students indulging in crypto activity could face criminal action.
Talking to the RIA Novosti news agency, Vladimir Shelupakhin from Gorgadze and Partners legal firm said, amateur miners, can get prosecuted for crimes.
The report notes that mining can cause significant material damages. Moreover, whenever the university pays a higher electricity bill, it will seek compensation from the students caught minting crypto. However, even if the miners refuse to cover these expenses, they have to pay with their freedom.
In Shelupakhin’s words:
“If it isn’t possible to identify the miners, then it is necessary to report to the police. And in this case, the violators will bear criminal liability under article 165 of the Criminal Code (Causing property damage by deceit or breach of trust).”
Since household electricity is subsidized in Russia, crypto mining becomes a whole lot fruitful affair. Overall, it isn’t uncommon to find various people running mining hardware in basements and garages in the country.
Moreover, the administration in the country is well aware of that issue and have suggested various meaeures aimed at curbing home mining.
Basically, the lawmakers want that utitlites can disconnect illegal miners from the grid. With this, consumers will have to declare their intended use of electric energy. Moreover, they also insist that internet providers share their IP addresses with the authorities regarding the suspected miners.
