The Governor of New York state in the United States, Kathy Hochul, has been urged by a group of local companies to deny business permits to bitcoin miners. The letter also requests the governor to address the “proof-of-work” digital currency mining in the state.
After China banished most of its crypto miners out of the country, many started seeking new homes. Some found themselves in New York to conduct their business. But only to meet with utter displeasure of local businesses.
“Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency mining use enormous amounts of energy to power the computers needed to conduct business – should this activity expand in New York, it could drastically undermine New York’s climate goals established under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.”

Some states are, however, friendlier to the crypto industry than others, like Florida. To supplement this, the Miami mayor even officially invited miners to his city and use nuclear power for mining operations some time ago.
NY, on the other hand, falls under the not-so-friendly file. Moreover, the letter was signed by multiple organizations assessment called for an environmental assessment of crypto mining in the state.
Furthermore, the letter highlighted how “re-powering” defunct fossil-fueled power plants could seriously jeopardize the state’s past progress along with meeting future.
