Get paid in crypto for using Toilet: South Korea’s innovative eco-toilet

Did you know using a toilet can earn cryptocurrency? Yes, that is right you can get paid in crypto for using a toilet in South Korea.

A South Korean professor of environmental engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology has developed an eco-friendly toilet, where a user will get paid in cryptocurrency for using it. The name of the toilet is Beevi. It’s a portmanteau of the words bee and vision.

The basic mechanism of this eco-friendly toilet includes converting the excrement to Biogas and manure. Manure is useful in farming, and Biogas is a good source of energy.

How does the eco-toilet work?

Firstly, The eco-toilet consists of a vacuum pump that pumps faeces into an underground tank. After that, the excrement breaks down to Methane by microorganisms. Methane is a fuel with myriad applications like gas stoves, hot-water boilers, etcetera.

On his invention, Professor Cho Jae-Weon said:

“If we think out of the box, faeces has precious value to make energy and manure. I have put this value into ecological circulation.

According to him, an average person defecates about 500g each day. 500g can provide up to 50 litres of methane gas. 50 litres of methane gas can generate 0.5 kWh of electricity. It can also drive a car for about 0.75 miles. In conclusion, An eco-friendly toilet provides a good source of clean energy.

Users of the toilet get paid in crypto currency called Ggool. As of now, each person using the toilet earns 10 Ggool a day. These coins can be used to purchase anything at the shop on the campus, from coffee to noodles to fruits or books.
