Popular Spanish airline Vueling is partnering up with payment provider BitPay to accept Bitcoin payments in the future. If everything goes smoothly, the Spanish airline will start accepting Bitcoin as early as 2023.
Vueling Airlines belongs to the International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG). Moreover, Vueling partnered up with one of the largest Bitcoin payment infrastructure providers, Bitpay for the incorporation of Bitcoin payments.
According to the press release,
“With this agreement, Vueling once again reaffirms its position as a digital airline. We are very pleased to have found in BitPay the best partner to offer our customers the possibility of making transactions with cryptocurrencies with the greatest security and reliability”.
In order to build the infrastructure, the airline will partner up with Universal Air Travel Plan Incorporated (UATP). UATP is a payments network provider for travel-related expenses.
With this partnership, Vueling will become the first low-cost airline in Europe to accept Bitcoin as a payment medium. Initially, users registered with the airline can take advantage of this option.
In fact, UATP’s Rachel Morowitz, senior VP partner processing stated:
“Offering cryptocurrency as a form of payment to the buying public is a must in this digital age of payments. UATP and BitPay partnered to bring this option to the airline industry and is fulfilling the rising demand of Vueling’s customers to pay with cryptocurrency.”
Users can still view the ticket prices in euros and can pay via multiple wallets and payment methods. Bitpay ecosystem will handle all the payment systems for Vueling airlines.
